I’ve taken a long hiatus from blogging. Putting so much focus into my work life, I haven’t really had a lot of free time – I get home after a long day and just don’t really feel up to to it. But I’m excited to start writing again – even if its one post per week! Plus, it’s something i truly enjoy doing – no matter what your passion may be, make time for it!
That being said, I’m aiming to put a stronger focus on the book side of the blog. Even if you aren’t a big reader, I encourage you to take a look at my reviews! I’m always reading different genres and I feel as though so many of the books I read are ones that anyone can enjoy! Reading is such a great way for me to disconnect and take a break from everything- if only it be for 15 minutes here and there, it makes such an impact on my day!
Getting lost in Darcey Bell’s novel A Simple Favor was absolutely inevitable for someone like me – I can never turn down a good mystery thriller. (Although this novel is best classified as a neo-noir, which is basically a dark and twisted drama). I was even more excited to read this one because it’s now a movie starring the amazing Blake Lively AND Anna Kendrick and it just hit theaters. And yes – I’m one of those people – I always prefer to read the book before I see the movie.
The story is mainly told from the POV of Stephanie, a stay-at-home mom, widow, and full-time blogger. Her best friend, Emily is a public relations executive for a fashion brand. Her busy schedule often interferes with her motherly responsibilities, so it’s perfectly convenient that her son, Nicky, is best friends with Stephanie’s son, Miles.
It all begins with a simple favor. Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son, Nicky after school and watch him for a few hours. But hours, days, and finally, a week goes by and Stephanie as not returned. She calls Stephanie’s husband, Sean, but hes dismisses her absence as a business trip.
As more time goes by, it becomes clear that this isn’t a business trip. Stephanie’s concern grows, and she shares details about Emily’s absence through her blog, hoping to raise awareness about her best friends disappearance. What she doesn’t share on her blog, however, is how close her and Emily’s husband have become in Stephanie’s absence. quickly become apparent that neither character is exactly who they thought they were – and perhaps these two best friends really don’t know that much about one another after all.
“You’d be amazed by what people will do. Things they’d never admit to anyone—not even to themselves.”
In fact, Stephanie, Emily, and Sean each have their share of dark secrets. It was really hard for me to like or connect with any of the characters – simply put, they each have their flaws. However, this may very well have been the authors intent as I do not believe it took away from the purpose of the plot – which was mind-boggling, intense, and totally thrilling.
It’s hard to share details about this book without giving it all away all the details – so I’m leaving the rest up to you. If you’re intrigued by what you’ve read so far, go ahead and give it a read! You won’t regret it.
